- 1.1 QUICK TOUR
-
- SlideRule is an algebraic-type calculator for the Apple Mac. It has precedence operation
- and tracks precision to avoid rounding errors. It is similar in operation to many ‘real’
- calculators and so most of it will need little explanation. The best way to learn about
- SlideRule is to try it out and see what happens.
-
- Try out these features:
-
- There are 10 memories under the ST and RC buttons, they are saved when you quit.
-
- The Conversion menu provides conversions between many common units.
-
- There are buttons for commonly used functions. Additionally, the Function menu
- offers some of the more esoteric ones.
-
- You can Undo/Redo the last action with the undo/redo button, or use command Z.
- The undo/redo button is in the top row:
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- There is a log window, like a printing calculator's. Open it from the File menu. The
- log window also displays error messages (try getting the log of zero).
-
- Appearance can be changed in the preferences dialog.
-
- Numbers can be copied and pasted as text into other applications.
-
-
-
- 1.2 WHAT’S NEW
-
- • Rewrote the calculator engine to track the precision of numbers as they
- are manipulated. This deals with the display of rounding errors.
- • Added combination and permutation operators.
- • Added a Functions menu with hyperbolic functions.
- • Rewrote most of the code behind the Log window. It's a cleaner
- implementation. Redesigned the log’s layout.
- • Major rewrite of the menu handling code:
- Customisable Convert menu.
- Convert menu now remembers last used conversion.
- Constants moved to the RCL popup menu. They are more accessible there.
- All menus operate faster.
- • Redesigned Prefs dialog. Now uses popup menus.
- • Changed the way commands from the keyboard and buttons are communicated
- to the inner calculator. It's simpler and more flexible.
- • Changed the way update events are handled because the program could misbehave
- on some machines under System 8.6.
- • Push and Pop moved to ST and RC menus, as alternative functions.
- Buttons are more animated when clicked.
- Changed colour schemes (again... the problem is that it has to work with
- a palette of 256 colours).

- 2.1 REGISTERING
-

- it out to see if it's what you need. Unregistered copies flash an ‘Unregistered’ message
- in the drag bar before quitting.
-
- You can register on-line at this address <http://order.kagi.com/?U3G> . Alternatively,
- you can register by mail using the Register application. The file ‘About Register’
- explains how to do this.
-
- Note
- If SlideRule's preferences file is damaged or lost it will forget that it has been registered, just enter your
- name and code into the About dialog again.
